Quite often these days, your clients are being exposed to new, powerful pain treatments for their pets. Recently, Zubrin™, Metacam®, Deramaxx® and Rimadyl® injectable have joined original Rimadyl and Etogesic® as effective pain treatments. While these treatments have proven effective, they also come with cautions and manufacturer-recommended protocols for safe dosing, monitoring and outcomes.

It is generally recommended that patients on NSAIDs receive a baseline test, a 14-day check and a follow-up every six months while on NSAIDs. A December article in DVM magazine noted that each of these medications includes guidance similar to this: "Two-week trials of various NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) with adequate animal evaluation should be performed to determine which medication provides the best response. Before prescribing any medications, the animal's health status, especially liver and kidney function, should be assessed. It is important to educate owners regarding potential side effects."1

Your IDEXX VetTest® analyzer's testing flexibility allows you to quickly and economically perform recommended baseline exams, and regular kidney and liver monitoring. The IDEXX FlexTest™ NSAID panel is a recommended combination of the single chemistries: ALKP, ALT, AST, BUN and CREA—chosen because they're standard tests for indicating damage and/or disease in the liver and kidneys.

Make a Note
The VetTest's Monitor Patient feature offers a quick view of health changes over time

The Monitor Patient feature allows you to keep track of a single patient's IDEXX VetLab results and print them out together for a quick comparison of changes over time. This is very useful for:

  • Serial blood glucose monitoring
  • Cortisol pre- and post-ACTH stimulation on the SNAP® Reader
  • Electrolyte monitoring with the IDEXX VetLyte®
  • Monitoring response to long-term medications, such as NSAIDs
  • Trending renal recheck tests, such as BUN and CREA

Here's a brief user's guide:

  1. Run patient blood work as normal by selecting New Sample from the main menu.
  2. When results are ready, select the Monitor Patient option from the Results screen. This will create a file to help you track this patient. Make a note of the patient ID so you can enter it accurately later.
  3. When runing blood work again on the same patient, you do not need to initiate the run by selecting Monitor Patient. You just need to make sure you select the Monitor Patient option at the end of the run.
  4. Run blood work as prompted.
  5. After you have run the second blood work, print out all results for that patient by selecting Monitor Patient from the main menu and then selecting Print Results. You will need to type the patient's name again.
The report will print out on the VetTest's internal printer.

NOTE: This feature works best when you are monitoring a patient over a short time period, since you will need to start over when you install a new VetTest software disk periodically.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I upgrade my VetTest software immediately when I receive a new disk?

Each time you upgrade your VetTest software, you ensure that you have the most recent information you need.

Our team is dedicated to calibrating each new lot of VetTest slides before you receive them. Your software disk contains this new calibration information. Without current calibration information, it's not possible to run new lots fo slides. Additionally, IDEXX periodically updates the VetTest's reference ranges based on data we collect from VetTest users' software disks that are returned to us (like yours!)

To sum it up, your software update allows you to continue providing quick and accurate results—test after test, patient after patient.
