How to prepare samples for your ProCyte Dx analyzer

1. Use an EDTA tube that can be secured in the adapter (13 mm x 75 mm, 1.3 mL, 650 μL).

  1. Identify the patient and initiate the sample on the IDEXX VetLab Station.
  2. Place the sample in the ProCyte Dx analyzer.
  3. Press the Start button on the ProCyte Dx analyzer and walk away.

Instructions
  1. Use fresh, well-mixed anticoagulated blood to avoid sample deterioration.
  2. Maintain an approximate 30° angle between the spreader and sample slide throughout.
  3. Spread the sample in one smooth, steady motion.
     
Tips
  • Include a blood film when results do not align with clinical expectations.
  • Make sure the film has a symmetrical body, a monolayer, and a feathered edge.
  • Avoid sample deterioration by limiting storage to 4 or fewer hours.
  • Quickly dry slides (air dry or use a fan on the cool setting).

Dot plots

Dot plots can be used to identify abnormalities within patient samples. Each dot represents an individual cell in this critical component of a complete blood count. Viewed together, they provide a snapshot of cellular morphology.

Maintaining your ProCyte Dx analyzer

Run the rinse procedure once a month

 

 

  1. Prepare the 5% bleach solution up to 1 week before running.
  2. Set aside 25 minutes to complete the procedure.
  3. Follow the detailed instructions in your operator’s guide.
     

Note: This procedure removes contaminants and checks analyzer performance.

Run a quality control once a month

Run a ProCyte Dx quality control once a month

 

  1. Use a vial of e-CHECK (XS) maintained at room temperature for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Set the QC adapter in the sample drawer and insert the e-CHECK (XS) vial.
  3. Follow the detailed instructions in your operator’s guide.
     

Note: This QC run ensures the reliability of the analyzer and reagent system.

Change the reagent kit when low, empty, or expired

 

 

  1. Use the easy-to-pull tabs to open the new kit.
  2. Fold open the top cover; do not alter the order of reagents.
  3. Avoid damage to the Quick-Connect Top when removing from and placing in bottles.
  4. Follow the detailed instructions in your operator’s guide.
     

Tip: To maximize reagent use, on the IDEXX VetLab Station, switch off the “Reagent Low” alert.

Clean the fan filter once a month

  1. Turn off the analyzer and open the right-side cover.
  2. Remove and vacuum the fan filter.
  3. Replace the fan filter and close the cover.
     

Tip: Schedule to coincide with one of your weekly reboots.

Frequently asked questions for the ProCyte Dx analyzer

A variety of maintenance and diagnostic procedures are required to ensure optimal performance of the ProCyte Dx analyzer.

  • Once every 24 hours: Place the analyzer in Standby mode. When you exit Standby mode, two procedures (an Auto Rinse and a background check) are automatically initiated. These take approximately 8 minutes to complete.
  • Every week: Reboot the analyzer and the information processing unit (IPU). 
  • Every month: Clean the air filter, perform the rinse procedure, and run the e-CHECK (XS) L2 quality control. 
  • As needed: Change the reagent kit and stain pack.

Maintaining your ProCyte One analyzer

Take the guesswork out of quality control with IDEXX SmartQC

 

IDEXX SmartQC Control is a quality control material specifically developed by IDEXX that is housed in the sample drawer and is run periodically to monitor the performance of the ProCyte One analyzer.

You will be prompted to change the SmartQC vial when it is empty or expired.

  1. Open the sample drawer.
  2. Remove the empty/expired SmartQC vial.
  3. Shake a new SmartQC vial vigorously for 10 seconds to ensure it is well mixed and then load it into the rear slot in the sample drawer.
  4. Close the sample drawer.

Change the reagent and sheath packs

 

 

The ProCyte One analyzer uses reagent and sheath fluids with every run. These fluids are easily loaded into the analyzer as packs and should be replaced when they are empty or expired. You’ll receive a notification on the IDEXX VetLab Station when a pack should be replaced.

  1. Open the analyzer door.
  2. To replace the reagent pack: Pull to remove the small gray reagent pack from inside of the analyzer. Then insert a new reagent pack until it clicks into place.
    OR
    To replace the sheath pack: Pull to remove the large gray sheath pack from inside of the analyzer. Then insert a new sheath pack until it clicks into place.
  3. Close the analyzer door.

Note: The door will not close completely if the pack is not seated properly.

What are the supplies?

These supplies are used exclusively with the ProCyte One analyzer: 
  • Reagent packs
  • Sheath packs
  • IDEXX SmartQC Control
  • Filters

How much are the supplies?

All ProCyte One supplies are offered on a Pay-per-Run basis. The inventory is provided up front at no charge, and then you are invoiced at the end of the month for only those runs performed.

How do I order more supplies?

IDEXX proactively monitors your usage of ProCyte One supplies via your IDEXX SmartService Solutions connection and will send you supplies automatically when your inventory is low. There is no need to order supplies or monitor your inventory!

Frequently asked questions for the ProCyte One analyzer

The ProCyte One analyzer is virtually maintenance free! There are just a couple of maintenance procedures that are required on an as-needed basis (frequency will vary based on analyzer usage):

  • Change the reagent and sheath packs when prompted by the IDEXX VetLab Station. 
  • Change the filter.
  • Perform a bleach clean of the analyzer (when prompted by IDEXX Customer and Technical Support).

ProCyte One Hematology Analyzer Operator’s Guide

Reagent packs, sheath packs, IDEXX SmartQC Control, and testing accessories for the ProCyte One analyzer are available at IDEXX Online Orders. Simply sign in to your account to order, or create an account today.

 

It takes less than 5 minutes to get results from a run on the ProCyte One analyzer.

You will be prompted to replace the filter on the ProCyte One analyzer approximately twice per year (this varies based on analyzer usage). An alert will appear on the IDEXX VetLab Station touch screen when the filter needs to be changed. It is important that you only change the filter when prompted or by accessing the procedure found on the ProCyte One Diagnostics screen on the IDEXX VetLab Station.

  1. Open the analyzer door.
  2. Remove the filter panel.
  3. Lift up on the green latch so that it’s perpendicular to the analyzer.
  4. Pull the filter to remove it from the analyzer.
  5. Load a new filter into the analyzer, ensuring the arrow on the filter is pointing up and is aligned with the light gray chamber above it.
  6. Lower the green latch so that it’s parallel to the analyzer.
  7. Replace the filter panel.
  8. Close the analyzer door.

The IDEXX CBC is the appropriate and most cost-effective option for routine preanesthetic or preventive care screenings on clinically healthy animals. Available for canine, feline, and equine patients, this option provides an automated CBC, including hemogram, five-part differential, platelets, platelet indices, as well as (for canine and feline patients) reticulocyte count and reticulocyte hemoglobin.

The IDEXX CBC-Select is the option recommended for sick patients. It includes the same components as the IDEXX CBC, as well as a blood film evaluation by a technician to evaluate for abnormal red and white blood cell morphology, blood parasites, unclassified cells, and immature cell lines. A clinical pathologist review is automatically included when results are markedly abnormal or when unclassified cells are seen based on specific established criteria.

Note: Add on to an IDEXX CBC previously performed at IDEXX Reference Laboratories or on an in-house IDEXX hematology analyzer (ProCyte Dx or LaserCyte Dx). Must be ordered within 72 hours of initial CBC.

Add on to an IDEXX CBC, avian/exotic CBC, or IDEXX CBC-Select. For IDEXX CBC-Select requests, a pathologist review is included and will be automatically performed at no additional charge if specific established criteria are met (see protocol information in the Online Test Directory at vetconnectplus.com ).

Test code 399 is not required for the automatic reflexed pathologist review on IDEXX CBC-Select requests.
